In White Plains and Peekskill, N.Y., the Parent Education Project, sponsored by the Westchester Student Advocacy Coalition (WSAC), helps parents, particularly those having children with learning disabilities, become effective advocates for the improved education of their children.
Abstract
The WSAC is a private nonprofit organization with 5 years of experience in providing educational advocacy services to students, parents, volunteers, and professionals throughout Westchester County. The Parent Education Project prepares parents to advocate for those educational programs which will best help their children learn. WSAC volunteers and members of the Junior League along with WSAC staff meet with parents to discuss their needs. Based on the information obtained, a parent training package is tailored to their needs. Each group of parents has at least two sessions of training that include such information as student legal entitlements, services available through individual school systems, how to access them, and indications of learning disabilities. The training program emphasizes small group interaction.
