THE FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF WORK GROUP POLICE OFFICERS ARE DESCRIBED. ALTHOUGH THIS FORM OF POLICE WORK WAS ESTABLISHED DECADES AGO IN SWEDEN, THE OFFICERS ARE UNDERPAID IN RELATION TO OTHER POLICE.
Abstract
WORK GROUP POLICE OFFICERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR VARIOUS FORMS OF POLICE-COMMUNITY PUBLIC RELATIONS AND INFORMATION DISSEMINATION WORK. THE HEDESUNDA (SWEDEN) POLICE WORK GROUP PUBLISHES A REGULAR NEWSLETTER, WORKS TOGETHER WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, PARTICULARLY YOUTH ORANIZATIONS, AND CONDUCTS POLICE LECTURES IN SCHOOLS. THE OFFICERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GATHERING AND ORGANIZING DATA ON PERSONS IN THEIR DISTRICT THAT ARE SOCIAL DEVIANTS, JUVENILE DELINQUENTS, AND CRIMINALLY INCLINED. THEY VISIT LOCAL BUSINESSES AND SHOPS AND INTERVIEW LOCAL RESIDENTS TO COLLECT INFORMATION ON ANY POLICE-RELATED COMMUNITY PROBLEMS. THIS FORM OF POLICE WORK IS NOT NEW IN SWEDEN, YET THE OFFICERS RECEIVE LITTLE RECOGNITION FROM THE POLICE UNION AND DO NOT RECEIVE EQUAL PAY, PROMOTION, OR WORK BENEFITS RELATIVE TO OTHER TYPES OF POLICE. --IN SWEDISH.
