This book describes the design, implementation, and maintenance of Wisconsin's Student Assistant Program (SAP), patterned after the business world employee assistant programs, to help students deal with alcohol and drug-related problems.
Abstract
A SAP is a comprehensive, joint school-community effort that identifies, assesses, refers, and supports students at all grade levels affected by alcohol and drug abuse. After discussing program functions, roles, and structures, the book discusses program design pertinent to early identification, assessment, intervention and referral, treatment, support, case management, and program integration. One major section of the manual covers basic support groups, describing the implementation of support groups, 'affected-others' groups, recovery support groups, and other 'use-focused' groups. The process of program implementation encompasses planning and organizing for implementation, policy development, program design, core group development, program promotion, and program evaluation. The discussion of program maintenance issues addresses pitfalls, maintenance methods, and program revitalization. Each chapter contains supplements that include program tools and detailed 'how-to' instructions. Appended resource list and 120-item bibliography.
