This bibliography and resource guide aims to allow advocates working to reduce firearms violence to identify and locate studies and articles that are the sources for the most commonly referenced statistics on firearms violence.
Abstract
The introduction notes that separate studies on the same topic sometimes generate distinctly different numerical results due to gaps in reliable and comprehensive data on gun violence, as well as the different data sources and methodologies of the researchers. The document begins with a list and description of eight publications recommended for every advocate. The next section lists resources related to general firearms violence, including firearms homicide, firearms homicide related to domestic violence, firearms homicide in the workplace, firearms suicide, firearms deaths of children, and nonfatal injuries related to firearms. Other sections cover the costs of firearms violence, gun-related crime, firearms ownership, weapons carrying, the use of guns in self-defense, gun buybacks, studies of self-defense by supporters of citizen gun ownership, licensed dealers, and marketing firearms to women and youth. Each citation includes bibliographic information a summary, cost, and source. Appended lists of organizations and agencies and discussion of how to understand and use statistics
