NATIONWIDE EXAMPLES, FROM ALL BRANCHES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, MARKING IMPROVEMENTS AND PROGRESS SINCE PASSAGE OF THE 1968 SAFE STREETS ACT.
Abstract
THIS REPORT CITES INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM POLICE, JUDICIAL, CORRECTIONAL, DELINQUENCY, PAROLE, PROBATION, AND STATE PLANNING OFFICIALS THROUGHOUT THE NATION AS TO CHANGES WHICH HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THEIR ORGANIZATIONS, PROGRAMS, AND PROCEDURES. THE EXAMPLES ARE ILLUSTRATIVE OF PROGRESS IN REDUCING AND CONTROLLING CRIME IN AMERICA. AS THE STUDY'S CONCLUSIONS POINT OUT HOWEVER, THE EXAMPLES ALSO SERVE TO INDICATE DEFICIENCIES, PARTICULARLY EVIDENT IN STILL UNACCEPTABLY HIGH CRIME RATES, INCREASINGLY FREQUENT PRISON UPRISINGS, AND LENGTHY PRE-TRIAL DELAYS.
