This article discusses the rise in membership of white supremacist organizations.
Abstract
Focusing on white supremacist groups, this article discusses the popularity and recruitment of such hate groups. Following a discussion of the various types of white supremacist groups including the skinheads, the Ku Klux Klan, the American Nazi Party, the Aryan Nation, the Posse Comitatus, and others, the author details the fact that violence associated with racism is usually directed at minorities, Jews, homosexuals, and whites who are seen as “race traitors.” After focusing on the types of tattoos favored by members of white supremacist gangs, the article discusses racist music and writings as well as Internet sites providing racist materials while catering to a racist audience. The article concludes by discussing both the rise in separate female-only racist groups which have emerged out of support for and to work with their male counterparts and the various watchdog organizations that track the size and activity of racist groups and which are an important resource to law enforcement officials hoping to prevent hate crimes.
