This document contains the instructor's guide, PowerPoint presentation, reading list, and student handout for an instructional segment of a college curricula on who is considered a crime victim, the types of harm crime victims experience, and the distinction between primary and secondary victims of crime.
Abstract
The intent of this instructional material is to provide students with an understanding of who may be a victim of crime, which includes not only the persons targeted for the crime, but also persons who have a close relationship with the victim (secondary victims). The instructional material can be modified for use in courses of various disciplines, including, but not limited to, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, nursing, social work, business, and history. The classroom time required for this instructional segment is 20-40 minutes. The instruction may be expanded to include additional readings and classroom discussion. A directory of faculty and student materials is provided. For each slide of the PowerPoint presentation of the material, instructors are given suggestions for comments and discussion. National resources for crime victims are listed.
