THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT LIARS ARE MORE LIKELY TO TELL THE TRUTH TO A FEMALE, AND THAT, THEREFORE, FEMALE POLYGRAPHISTS ARE ABLE TO OBTAIN CONFESSIONS FASTER AND MORE OFTEN THAN THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS.
Abstract
REASONS OFFERED TO EXPLAIN THIS PHENONENOM INCLUDE THE LIAR'S HESITANCY TO LIE TO A 'MOTHER FIGURE' AND THE THEORY THAT LIARS ARE NOT AS MUCH ON GUARD WITH A FEMALE AS THEY ARE WITH A MALE POLYGRAPHIST. THE EXPERIENCE OF THE PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT IN USING FEMALE POLYGRAPHISTS IS CITED TO SUPPORT THE ARGUMENT THAT FEMALES PERFORM AS WELL OR BETTER THAN THEIR MALE CO-WORKERS, CAN ASSUME AN EQUAL WORKLOAD, AND NEED TO RECEIVE NO PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT. THE USE OF FEMALE POLYGRAPHISTS IN 'HIGHLY SENSITIVE' SITUATIONS INVOLVING FEMALES (BOTH AS VICTIMS AND AS SUSPECTS) IS ALSO ADVOCATED.
