The Wichita, Kansas Police Department makes extensive use of helicopters in its law enforcement efforts in both proactive patrols and responses to specific calls for service.
Abstract
The Air Section originated in 1969 and now consists of two helicopters and six staff members. Along with routine aerial patrols, the section files special reconnaissance and surveillance missions in support of criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, narcotics interdiction, and drug task force operations. Through information exchanges with ground officers, the helicopter crews also maintain current information on citywide locations identified as problem areas. The Air Section also appears at the Special Olympics and other community activities. The helicopter services are also available on request to other city departments for tours and transportation of dignitaries, aerial photography, and other purposes. Photographs.
