PROBLEMS AND PLANS OF THE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS, IN WICHITA, ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
RACIAL TENSION AND UNREST IN WICHITA IN THE SUMMER OF 1965, ILLUSTRATED THE NEED FOR COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS. FACTORS OF RACE, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND BUSINESS ARE USED AS A BASE TO DESCRIBE THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND PHYSICAL MAKEUP OF WICHITA. POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED WITHIN CATEGORIES OF OPERATION CRIME CONTROL, SCHOOL PROGRAMS-CURRENT AND FUTURE, TRAINING PROGRAMSPOLICE OFFICERS, RECRUITMENT, WORK OPPORTUNITIES NOW, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, AND SUMMER RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS. OTHER PROGRAMS, IN THE PLANNING STAGE, ARE A BLOCK WATCHERS PROGRAM, SELF PROTECTION PROGRAM, AND A NEGRO HERITAGE PROGRAM. THESE PROGRAMS ARE LANGUISHING BECAUSE OF LACK OF PERSONNEL. A LIST OF AGENCIES CONTACTED, AND THEIR DEGREE OF PARTICIPATION IS GIVEN.
