This book provides a collection of presentations given at the Will Electronic Monitoring Have a Future in Europe? workshop held in Freiburg, Germany, June 13-15, 2002.
Abstract
Today, electronic monitoring can be found in many Western European countries. Projects have been developed and established in correctional systems in the countries of England, Sweden, and the Netherlands. In addition, pilot projects exist in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain. In 2002, a workshop was held in Freiburg, Germany, entitled Will Electronic Monitoring Have a Future in Europe? and was attended by many practitioners and researchers from each European country applying or experimenting with electronic monitoring. Key issues addressed at the workshop included presentations of programs and evaluative research on electronic monitoring. This book provides a collection of 29 presentations given at the workshop. The intent is to contribute to the advancement of the research on electronic monitoring and the surrounding discussions and debates. The book begins with an overview of electronic monitoring and its future in the European world. It continues with a presentation on the pilot projects and research or evaluative programs in Europe. This is followed with three round table discussions on electronic monitoring and net-widening, social work and electronic monitoring, and electronic monitoring in the development of punishment. The book concludes with a presentation on electronic monitoring’s future in Europe from an American point of view.
