This article briefly outlines successful strategies to securing law enforcement grant funding.
Abstract
In an environment of shrinking government funding, finding a law enforcement grant requires preparation, organization, and innovation. Successful grant writing relies on careful attention being paid to details. To begin, one must sit down and read the grant application over carefully and understand fully the information that is being requested. Many parts of a grant application can be completed before the opportunity is announced with one of the first step’s in preparation to contact the State’s Federal grant representative. During strategic preparation, the budget should begin to take shape. When moving into the organization and writing of the application, it is important to keep the information compiled organized. While writing the application, common writing style guidelines should be followed. Before sending the application, what has been written should be carefully reviewed and a neutral party should look over the application. Also, it should be understood that creativity and innovation may be necessary to achieve adequate funding for the requested project. Consider looking for grants that benefit more than just one agency, such as grants having multijurisdictional effects and benefits.
