This article describes a regional mobile data system for police departments in the Hartford, CT, area.
Abstract
Planners intended that the new system would be a fully automated mobile public safety unit, i.e., one that provides the same data-processing tools whether the officer is in a mobile unit or the police station. The system also had to be capable of reporting to and integrating with an expanding group of national, State, regional and local public safety information systems. The article looks at the project as a classic mobile data system and as part of a future regional information system. The first of three phases of the project has been deployed to more than 600 police cruisers in 39 member communities. Several towns and public safety agencies outside the original members have joined the program, and the state of Connecticut is interested in implementing the system for the entire state. Figures
