WHITE OFFENDERS CONSTITUTED 63.4 PERCENT OF FIRST ADMISSIONS, BLACKS CONSTITUTED 30.6 PERCENT, AND NATIVE AMERICANS 3.3 PERCENT. MORE THAN 80 PERCENT OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WERE NOT MARRIED AT ADMISSION. ONE-THIRD OF THE WOMEN AND APPROXIMATELY ONE-SIXTH OF THE MEN WERE DIVORCED OR SEPARATED. FIRST ADMISSIONS WITH PREVIOUS FELONY CONVICTIONS ACCOUNTED FOR 43.6 PERCENT OF THE MEN AND 10.2 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN. ABOUT TWO-FIFTHS OF THE FIRST ADMITTED MEN AND ONE-FOURTH OF THE FIRST ADMITTED WOMEN HAD PREVIOUS PENAL EXPERIENCE. TABLES CONSTITUTE THE BULK OF THE REPORT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--LWM).
