DATA REFLECTING SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF JUVENILES WHO WERE RELEASED AND RERELEASED FROM WISCONSIN JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS ARE PRESENTED; COMPARATIVE DATA FROM 1973 THROGH 1977 ARE EMPHASIZED.
Abstract
DATA WERE PREPARED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES, THE DIVISION OF CORRECTIONS, OFFICE OF SYSTEMS AND EVALUATION OF WISCONSIN. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY FOR FIRST RELEASED JUVENILE MALES CONTINUED THE DOWNWARD TREND, RESULTING IN A 1977 AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY OF 7.8 MONTHS. THERE WAS AN APPROXIMATE 50 PERCENT DECREASE FROM 1976 IN THE PROPORTION OF JUVENILE MALES WITH EXCELLENT VOCATIONAL PROGRESS AT THE INSTITUTIONS. ALL OTHER CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS AGE AT RELEASE, RACE, AND LIVING ARRANGEMENT PRIOR TO ADMISSION REMAINED RELATIVELY CONSTANT OVER THE 5-YEAR PERIOD. FIRST RELEASED MALES TOTALED 544 FOR 1977. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY FOR FIRST RELASED FEMALES CONTINUED THE DOWNWARD TREND, RESULTING IN A 1977 AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY OF 4.7 MONTHS. THERE WAS A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE FROM 1976 TO 1977 IN THE PERCENTAGE OF FIRST RELEASED FEMALES WITH EXCELLENT INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT BUT A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN THE PERCENTAGE OF FEMALES WITH EXCELLENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS DURING THE SAME PERIOD. ALL OTHER CHARACTERISTICS REMAINED CONSTANT IN 1977. A TOTAL OF 66 JUVENILE FEMALES WERE FIRST RELEASED IN 1977. RERELEASED JUVENILE MALES NUMBERED 105 IN 1977; RERELEASED FEMALES TOTALED 9 FOR THE YEAR. TABULAR DATA CONSTITUTE THE BULK OF THE REPORT. (LWM)
