STATISTICAL INFORMATION REGARDING ADULT AND JUVENILE RESIDENTS OF WISCONSIN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY CENTERS FOR 1977 REVEALS THE 5-YEAR TRENDS FOR 1973 THROUGH 1977.
Abstract
AS OF DECEMBER 31, 1977, 3,097 MALES AND 135 FEMALES WERE RESIDING IN WISCONSIN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. ADULT MALES WERE HOUSED IN THE WISCONSIN STATE PRISON, THE WISCONSIN STATE REFORMATORY, NINE CAMPS OF THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, AND OTHER CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES. ADULT FEMALES RESIDED IN THE TAYCHEEDAH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AND ONE CAMP FACILITY. NINETY-SIX MALE YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS RESIDED IN THE WISCONSIN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AND BLACK RIVER CAMP. THERE WAS ONE FEMALE YOUTHFUL OFFENDER HOUSED AT TAYCHEEDAH. EIGHTEEN MALE JUVENILE OFFENDERS WERE ASSIGNED TO ADULT INSTITUTIONS. IN ADDITION, 18 MALE ADULTS RESIDED IN A COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER. THE ADULT MALE POPULATION DECREASED BY 0.7 PERCENT FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, AND FEMALES SHOWED A DECREASE OF 2.9 PERCENT. RESIDENTS CONVICTED OF FELONIES COMPRISED 98.7 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION. WHITE MALES DECREASED BY 2.3 PERCENTAGE POINTS FROM 1976 TO 56.3 PERCENT OF THE MALE POPULATION; WHITE FEMALES INCREASED BY 6.3 PERCENT TO 45.1 PERCENT OF THE FEMALE POPULATION. THE MEDIAN AGE OF ADULT MALES WAS 25.6 YEARS IN 1977. IN 1976 IT WAS 25 YEARS. THE MEDIAN AGE OF ADULT FEMALES INCREASED FROM 25.7 IN 1976 TO 27.1 IN 1977. THE MEDIAN LENGTH OF SENTENCE, EXCLUDING LIFE, INDETERMINATE, AND THOSE ON TEMPORARY HOLD IS 5.5 YEARS FOR MALES AND 5.0 FOR FEMALES. THE LENGTHS OF SENTENCES APPEAR TO BE INCREASING. ROBBERY CONVICTIONS CONTINUED TO INCREASE FOR MALES, ACCOUNTING FOR 27 PERCENT OF THE CURRENT RESIDENTS. EIGHT OF WISCONSIN'S 72 COUNTIES WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMITTING 74.4 PERCENT OF THE MALE RESIDENTS. TABULAR INFORMATION CONSTITUTES THE BULK OF THE REPORT. (LWM)
