PLANNING, WRITING, AND TESTING OF A COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING COURSE AS REVISED AFTER TESTING, IS OUTLINED, AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS USED ARE LISTED.
Abstract
FROM AUGUST 1976 THROUGH JULY 1977, THE WISCONSIN JAIL OFFICERS TRAINING PROJECT IDENTIFIED TRAINING NEEDS OF LOCAL CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS, CONTACTED POTENTIAL CURRICULUM WRITERS, DEVELOPED A TRAINING COURSE WHICH INCLUDED AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS, AND CONDUCTED A PILOT TRAINING COURSE FOR 23 STUDENTS. THE COURSE LASTED FIVE DAYS A WEEK FOR A 5-WEEK PERIOD. AS A RESULT OF SUGGESTIONS FROM THE STUDENTS, THE SECTIONS ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR WERE REVISED TO GIVE LESS TIME TO THEORY AND MORE TIME TO PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS, WHILE THE SECTIONS ON JAIL STANDARDS WERE INCREASED. THE PORTION ON JAIL SECURITY WAS EXPANDED FROM THREE TO SIX HOURS. APPENDIXES GIVE THE PRELIMINARY COURSE OUTLINE, A LIST OF PERSONS CONTACTED TO WRITE CURRICULUM, A LIST OF THOSE WHO WROTE SECTIONS OF THE COURSE, AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS USED, AND THE COURSE OUTLINE AFTER FINAL REVISION. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A FULL-TIME COORDINATOR FOR JAIL OFFICER TRAINING BE HIRED TO CONTINUALLY UPDATE THE MATERIALS, PROVIDE QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS, AND MAKE SUCH TRAINING AVAILABLE TO CORRECTIONS OFFICERS IN VARIOUS AREAS OF THE STATE
