Information regarding physical assaults on Wisconsin Law enforcement officers during 1984-89 showed that 95 percent of the assaults involved hands, fists, or feet rather than weapons and that disturbance calls, the handling of prisoners, and arrest attempts were involved in more than 70 percent of the 1989 assaults.
Abstract
Nearly 60 percent of the assaults took place between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. Ninety-eight percent of the 932 assaults reported in 1989 were cleared by arrest. During the past 6 years the number of assaults has increased by more than 30 percent. The percentage of assaults occurring during responses to disturbance calls or while assigned to a 1-person vehicle or on another assignment has increased, while the percentage related to arrests and traffic stops or involving officers assigned to 2-person vehicles has decreased. In addition, three law enforcement officers were murdered and nine died in accidents while on duty during the past six years. Tables, figures, and appended data collection form and table
