THE ALCOHOL EDUCATION AND TREATMENT PROGRAM (AETP), BEGUN IN 1975 WITH LEAA FUNDING, IS A VOLUNTARY SHORT-TERM, HIGH INTENSIITY LEARNING EXPERIENCE WHICH EMPHASIZES THE SOCIAL SKILLS NEEDED FOR SURVIVAL IN THE COMMUNITY.
Abstract
THE FIRST STEP IN THIS PROGRAM, DESIGNED FOR ALCOHOLICS AND 'PROBLEM DRINKERS', IS AN EDUCATIONAL PROCESS FOR OFFENDERS, ALL OF WHOM ENTER THE PROGRAM VOLUNTARILY BEFORE BEING RELEASED ON PAROLE. THEY ARE TOLD ABOUT THE SHORT- AND LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON THE BODY, INTRODUCED TO THE ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS PROGRAM, ADVISED ON THE AVAILABILITY AND USE OF ANTABUSE, AND COUNSELED ON HOW BEST TO MEET THEIR INDIVIDUAL GOALS. THE CLIENT IS GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN ABSTINENCE AND RESPONSIBLE DRINKING. OTHER PROGRAM PROCESSES INCLUDE ASSERTIVENESS TRAINING AND, AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO SELF-MEDICATION FROM ALCOHOL, RELAXATION TRAINING. THE AETP, CONDUCTED IN A MINIMUM SECURITY FACILITY, OFFERS PROGRAMMING FOR MEN ONLY. EACH WEEK FIVE NEW MEN, CHOSEN FROM AMONG THOSE WHO HAVE APPLIED, BEGIN THE SIX-WEEK PROGRAM. PROGRAM CAPACITY IS 30. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...ELW
