These Senate hearings investigated the efficiency and management of the Federal Witness Security Program, created by the Organized Crime Act of 1970 to protect Government witnesses and the families of witnesses who testify in organized crime cases.
Abstract
In view of widely publicized complaints about the program, the Senate subcommittee decided to hear testimony about current problems in the program and improvements made. Those testifying include protected witnesses, Department of Justice officials, subcommittee investigators, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and representatives from the U.S. Marshals Service. Statements submitted by persons tetifying include descriptions of procedures used to provide new identities, jobs, and protection to witnesses; budget histories; and testimony as to problems encountered by witnesses. An index is included.
