A CLINICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE INMATES OF AN AFTER-CARE HOME FOR WOMEN IN AMRITSAR, INDIA IS PRESENTED IN THIS SECOND OF TWO REPORTS.
Abstract
FIFTY INMATES OF THE HOME WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO MAIN GROUPS FOR PURPOSES OF THE STUDY: (A) THOSE HAVING NO PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS BUT ADMITTED TO THE HOME FOR SOCIAL OR ECONOMIC REASONS, AND (2) THOSE WHO HAD BEEN ADMITTED TO THE HOME PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THEIR ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR. FOR THE PURPOSES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION THE FOLLOWING TESTS WERE GIVEN TO BOTH GROUPS -- BHATIA'S BATTERY OF PERFORMANCE TEST OF INTELLIGENCE, SACK'S SENTENCE COMPLETION TEST, AND GOODENOUGH'S DRAW A PERSON TEST. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN THE IQ'S OF THE TWO GROUPS; NO DISTINGUISHING TYPES OF PERSONALITIES COULD BE ASSIGNED TO THE NONDELINQUENT AND DELINQUENT GROUPS ON THE EXTRAVERSION-INTROVERSION DIMENSION; THE MAJORITY OF THE NONDELINQUENTS WERE SUBMISSIVE IN THEIR SOCIAL RELATIONS, WHILE THE MAJORITY OF THE DELINQUENT GROUP WERE AGRESSIVE, DOMINANT, AND REBELLIOUS. FINDINGS ALSO INDICATED THAT CONFLICTS IN THE AREA OF HETEROSEXUAL BEHAVIOR ARE MORE FREQUENT IN THE DELINQUENT GROUP AS COMPARED WITH THE NONDELINQUENT GROUP. THERE WAS A HIGH INCIDENCE OF PARENTAL LOSS BY DEATH OR DESERTION FOR BOTH GROUPS OF INMATES UNDER 16 YEARS AND A HIGH INCIDENCE OF DISTURBED PARENT-CHILD RELATIONS IN THE DELINQUENT GROUP AS COMPARED WITH THE NONDELINQEUNT GROUP.
