Abstract
The volume is intended for use both as a text in courses on women and crime and as a reference guide on major issues related to women and criminal justice. An analysis of trends in female criminality includes discussions of explanations advanced for female crime patterns and changes. A historical overview of criminal justice processing of women notes that it parallels the history of women's status in American economic and social life. Correctional institutions and programming for women are also examined from a historical perspective and in terms of the needs for corrections in the future. A discussion of the victimization of women summarizes the literature about incest, rape, battering, and sexual harassment. Law, policing, and corrections as occupations for women are described in terms of the efforts to overcome historical barriers to entry and the issues faced by women today. Tables, chapter references, author index, and subject index.
