This book presents a historical perspective and theoretical insight regarding the treatment of female offenders and female criminal justice practitioners from the 19th century to the present.
Abstract
An examination of myths and realities associated with women offenders challenges the myths of the criminal justice system's chivalrous treatment of female offenders and an increased female crime rate due to the women's movement. A review of the treatment of female inmates addresses the theory and practice of women's corrections; profiles female inmates in general, women on death row, and black and Hispanic women; and considers their physical and mental health care, rehabilitation programs, and access to the courts. A historical overview of the treatment of female criminal justice professionals examines their experience in law enforcement, the legal profession, and corrections. Attention is given to professional sex-oriented performance studies and patterns of sex discrimination. The study concludes that significant sex discrimination rooted in stereotyped views of female social roles still undermines the equal treatment of female offenders and criminal justice professionals compared to the treatment of male offenders and professionals.
