This paper examines the actual views of women regarding their feminity and changes in their social and work lives as a result of being sworn police officers.
Abstract
The large numbers of women moving into this most traditionally male area of police work are presumably exposed to the traditional beliefs and ideology that go with the profession. Has it altered, diminished, or affected their feminine identification as women vis-a-vis their male colleagues and the significant others in their family and personal lives? The population for this study consisted of 135 women, all of whom are fulltime sworn police officers. Their ages ranged from 21-52, and they have served as fulltime police from 1 to 28 years.
