A historical perspective of the female offender, along with a profile of female offenders and programs and services offered to them are discussed.
Abstract
Adult females account for 4 percent of the total offender population. There are few facilities for female offenders and a limited number of programs available. One reason for this is that the small number of female offenders makes programming very costly. Changes in the future prison population will require an increasing use of community resources, expanded work-release and study-release programs, additional halfway houses and restitution centers, and an increase in knowledge and skills by correctional workers on the special needs of female offenders. Seminar agenda and listing of information resources appended.
