STATEWIDE SURVEY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS AND PREVALENCE OF USING FEMALE PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICERS IN THE SUPERVISION OF ADULT MALE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
A SURVEY WAS MADE IN OCTOBER 1970 OF ADULT PROBATION AND PAROLE AGENCIES IN THE FIFTY STATES, PUERTO RICO, THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, AND THE EIGHTY-NINE FEDERAL DISTRICT COURTS. ACCORDING TO THE STUDY FORTY-TWO STATE PROBATION AND PAROLE AGENCIES, PUERTO RICO, THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, AND NINE DISTRICT COURTS HAVE WOMEN ON THEIR PROBATION STAFFS. OF THE FIFTY-THREE AGENCIES EMPLOYING WOMEN, ONLY TWENTY-EIGHT INDICATED THAT THEY ALLOW WOMEN TO SUPERVISE MALE OFFENDERS. THESE TWENTY-EIGHT AGENCIES REPORTED THAT FEMALE PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICERS ARE ABLE TO SUPERVISE VIRTUALLY ALL TYPES OF ADULT MALE OFFENDERS AS EFFECTIVELY AS MEN. AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT PROBATION AND PAROLE ADMINISTRATORS WHO RESTRICT THE USE OF FEMALE OFFICERS MAY BE MISSING AN OPPORTUNITY TO SOLVE RECRUITING PROBLEMS AND TO PROVIDE A GREATER DEGREE OF FLEXIBILITY IN TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES FOR INDIVIDUAL OFFENDERS.
