Findings from a 1975 Australian survey of 18,694 interviews show that the assault rate was 47 times higher among separated or divorced women compared to married women.
Abstract
In addition, many incidents that are reported as rape by the victim to the police appear not to be officially recorded as such. Data are analyzed pertaining to reasons for not reporting assaults to the police, fear of crime among women (47.7 percent felt reasonably safe walking alone in their neighborhood at night), and sex of the offender (offenders were overwhelmingly male). Seven tables and 18 reference notes are provided.
