USING IBM MAG CARD 'SELECTRIC' TYPEWRITERS THE CLERICAL STAFF OF THE U.S. ATTORNEY'S OFFICE HAS MECHANIZED THE REPETITIVE ASPECTS OF LEGAL DOCUMENT PREPARATION, ALLOWING QUICKER HANDLING OF OFFICE PAPERWORK.
Abstract
THE IBM MAG CARD 'SELECTRIC' TYPEWRITERS USE MAGNETIC CARDS TO STORE INFORMATION WHICH CAN LATER BE PLAYED OUT AUTOMATICALLY ON THE ELECTRICALLY POWERED KEYBOARD. APPROXIMATELY 100 SHORT DOCUMENTS ARE STORED ON MAGNETIC CARDS. EACH MAGNETIC CARD TYPEWRITER OPERATOR HAS A SET OF THESE CARDS, AND EACH ATTORNEY HAS A SUPPLY OF NUMBERED MIMEOGRAPHED FORMS WHICH CORRESPOND TO THE FILE NUMBERS ON THE CARDS. TO PRODUCE A SPECIFIC FORM, THE CORRESPONDING CARD IS INSERTED IN THE TYPEWRITER, WHICH AUTOMATICALLY TYPES THE INFORMATION. OTHER INFORMATION SUCH AS NOT-GUILTY LISTS, JAIL LISTS, COMPLAINTS, AND THE SIX MONTH LIST OF CRIMINAL CASES PENDING ARE STORED MAGNETICALLY AND CAN BE REPRODUCED AND UPDATED WITH A MINIMUM OF EFFORT. USING THIS SYSTEM, THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK HAS KEPT STAFF INCREASES TO A MINIMUM WHILE MAINTAINING CONTROL OF THE RAPIDLY INCREASING CASE WORKLOAD.
