Abstract
This report from the United Nations Economic and Social Council presents information on the work of the UN's Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. The Institute was established in 1986 with the primary role of carrying out action-oriented research and training, providing information and advisory services, and implements its activities at the interregional and national levels. The work of the Institute follows six areas which are described in detail in this report. The six areas are 1) countering the threat of organized crime to security and development; 2) increasing the efficiency of criminal justice systems and protection of vulnerable groups; 3) promoting international criminal law and practice: the War Crimes Justice Project; 4) sharing best practices, building capacity to promote human rights and improving access to services; 5) security governance and countering the appeal of terrorism; and 6) training and advanced education: building capacity in crime prevention and criminal justice. The final section of the report presents information on new initiatives, partnerships, and platforms for growth being undertaken by the Institute. These areas deal with countering trafficking in precious metals and gemstones, addressing security and crime prevention in urban settings, countering environmental crime, dealing with piracy by working with the International Maritime Organization, and dealing with law enforcement and public health.
