Abstract
Basic information is provided on AIDS, AIDS-related complex, and human immunodeficiency virus. Symptoms of AIDS-related disease processes, including central nervous system complications, are described. The AIDS antibody test, reactions to test results, and issues relating to testing are discussed. Suggestions are provided for interventions, including counseling plans. Also considered are the particular concerns of youth, women, ethnic minorities, hemophiliacs, and families and friends of AIDS victims. Special issues related to homsexuality, substance abuse, risk reduction behaviors, and AIDS-related suicide are examined. The format of each chapter includes an overview of how AIDS affects a specific population group, a discussion of treatment issues, illustrative case histories, interventions and counseling plans, discussion questions, and a cross-reference guide directing the reader to coverage of related issues. Also included are comments and observations of professionals experienced in working with AIDS. Appendixes include a glossary, a compendium of medical treatments and known side-effects, a list of National and State resources, selected references for clients, and a selected bibliography for health care workers. Chapter footnotes and references.
