This book presents a comprehensive program model for helping multiproblem families, with attention to the development of an intake system, a conceptual framework for assessment, intervention strategies, termination, staff, and program evaluation.
Abstract
Intervention should focus on the family system rather than the specific problems of individual members, and counselors and caseworkers should build upon healthy family functioning rather than emphasize pathological family characteristics. Agencies involved with multiproblem families must develop clear intake criteria and devise precise intake processes and procedures. Assessment continues throughout treatment and addresses a family's strengths and weaknesses on three levels: instrumental (each family member's ability to function responsibly), intrapsychic (family members' ability to handle their emotions), and interpersonal (family members' abilities to handle interpersonal relations). Diagnostic tools are required for conducting an in-home assessment, an assessment of family structure, and an examination of developmental stages. Intervention strategies should be centered in an empowerment of the family, action-oriented problemsolving strategies, and an ecological approach that uses community resources. Intervention termination occurs when the family can meet its own needs, cope with crises, and access community resources. Training and supervision are important for supporting and maintaining staff. Program evaluation should research the processes and outcomes of treatment. Descriptions of exemplary home-based, family-centered programs; a resource directory; a 125-item annotated bibliography; and a subject index.
