This report describes the two major funding sources offered by the Federal Government--the Drug Free Communities Support Program and the Weed and Seed Initiative--for community coalitions seeking to make long-term changes in their communities.
Abstract
The Drug Free Communities Support Program is offered through the Office of National Drug Control Policy and is administered by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration/Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. It is awarded to community coalitions working toward the prevention of youth substance abuse. The Weed and Seed Initiative is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Capacity Development Office and provides funding for local Weed and Seed programs. Weed and Seed programs designate a local Weed and Seed site, usually a high-crime neighborhood, and then take a comprehensive, multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization within the targeted area. The report describes the goals and objectives for both programs, as well as the eligibility requirements, the funding application process, and quick tips for creating strong applications. The similarities and differences between the two programs are discussed in terms of their audience, program oversight, program parameters, and performance measures. Examples are presented of programs using both sources of funding and contact information is presented to learn more about the programs. Exhibits
