This packet presents information, program suggestions, and materials for use by community leaders in promoting the theme of Crime Prevention Month in October 1994: "Working Together To Stop the Violence."
Abstract
An overview of statistics on the prevalence and nature of violence precedes an introduction to the campaign theme, which is to "Turn Off the Violence" (TOV). This campaign has the goals of making people aware of nonviolent ways to deal with anger and conflict and to help both adults and children realize that violent entertainment creates a climate that fosters the acceptability of violence. On TOV Day, October 27, 1994, people will be asked to turn off violent television programs, not listen to violent music, not go to violent movies or rent violent videos, and engage in alternative activities that are both nonviolent and constructive. The aim is to promote changes in attitudes and behavior all year long. Suggestions for a proclamation content and ceremony for Crime Prevention Month in a community are provided. Suggestions for organizing crime prevention month include a case study for celebrating Crime Prevention Month in Milwaukee, guidelines for establishing a volunteer program, and additional ideas for celebrating Crime Prevention Month. For communities who wish to use Crime Prevention Month to launch a long-term program to stop youth violence, profiles are provided for violence- prevention programs that have been effective. A list of McGruff educational products is followed by a special events calendar. 11 selected readings and reproducible materials (brochures, posters, articles, and activity sheets)
