This paper presents results of a preliminary evaluation of the Community Solution to Gang Violence (CSGV) initiative's progress to date.
Abstract
The CSGV, based in Edmonton, Alberta, is a living entity, consisting of over 30 organizations working together to address the issue of gangs and gang violence. Participants' voices indicate general satisfaction with the initiative and its progress. It is noted that increasing representation from youth, ex-gang members, and representatives from additional groups in the community requires attention. Positive media publicity on the initiative is a focus of future work for the Youth Working Group, and funding continues to be an ongoing issue. This evaluation of the CSGV was a joint effort between practitioners and researchers, and a first step toward the continuation and strengthening of CSGV. It is recommended that future evaluations draw on participants' experiences and knowledge. The objectives for this paper were to discuss the theoretical and methodological grounding for a preliminary evaluation, provide a brief description of the CSGV, document the development of the initiative, and suggest future directions that the initiative and its evaluation might take.
