Just over 500 abstracts of incidents of violence in the workplace have been composed from articles in various media sources, such as major U.S. newspapers, weekly business magazines, academic journals, and security trade publications.
Abstract
The sources contain information on studies, surveys, statistical analyses, and cases on workplace violence from 1989 to 1994. The criteria for workplace violence used in the selection of the sources include not only incidents of injury or homicide, but also threats and assaults, abusive phone calls, stalking, sexual harassment, and robberies. The abstracts encompass every type of workplace, from fast-food stores, manufacturing plants, and schools, to hotels, libraries, government offices, and computer service firms. Article summaries are also included where (physical) access controls of pre- employment screening is specifically cited as a possible deterrent. A broad, general view of the topic is presented by summarized studies, surveys, and statistical analyses, case description, and possible resolutions. The abstracts are intended to provide the background documentation for a security professional to develop plans and programs for workplace-violence awareness and prevention.
