This book provides discussions and guidelines for preventing and managing violent incidents in the workplace.
Abstract
Organized in a before-during-and-after format, the author provides answers to questions associated with addressing such violent workplace occurrences as physical assault, threats, intimidation, stalking, and homicide. Part I discusses aspects of workplace violence. It identifies high-risk workplaces and occupations and compares normal and abnormal behavior. A review of forms of violence focuses on motivations for violence, internal crimes against the company, drug abuse in the workplace, and domestic violence in the workplace. A profile of the violent person includes an outline of the warning signs of violent behavior. Part II addresses security steps that should be taken before workplace violence occurs. A chapter on employment conditions and violence considers ingredients that foster a volatile workplace, corporate policies and procedures, and legal aspects of a secure work environment. A chapter on education and training focuses on employee education, manager and supervisor training, and training for the crisis intervention team. A discussion of policies and procedures considers hiring, termination, employee-assistance programs, intervention and action plans, and security procedures. Part III examines security measures during workplace violence, as it discusses threatening behavior and violent behavior. Part IV, which addresses security management procedures after workplace violence has occurred, discusses postincident planning, media coverage, posttraumatic stress, and the resumption of operations. The concluding section profiles the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration's model program. Chapter references and a subject index
