This workshop discussion on insurance crime focuses on cases involving marine insurance, fire insurance, motor car insurance, and life insurance.
Abstract
Investigative and legal perspectives on sample cases of marine-insurance fraud involve hull and machinery insurance and cargo insurance. Countermeasures are suggested in the discussion, including the consistent enforcement of uniform standards of seaworthiness for marine vessels. The discussion of cases of fire-insurance fraud focuses on arson and its motives, its effect on insurers, its detection, and its prevention. Descriptions of various types of fraud related to automobile insurance are followed by investigative suggestions. Legal and investigative countermeasures are also suggested for various types of life insurance fraud. General recommendations for countering insurance fraud include the enactment of concise statutes that target specific types of insurance fraud and the training of law enforcement personnel in areas associated with insurance fraud. Preventive suggestions for insurers focus on proper underwriting procedures and thorough claims investigations.
