This is the first comprehensive summary and analysis of violence as a serious and multidimensional health issue throughout the world.
Abstract
The first chapter presents a perspective on violence as a global health problem, which includes a typology of violence, the measurement of violence and its impact, how violence can be prevented, and associated problems for national decisionmakers. A series of chapters then addresses issues, prevention methods, and public health recommendations for countering various types or manifestations of violence. These include youth violence; child abuse and neglect by parents and other caregivers; violence by intimate partners; abuse of the elderly; sexual violence; self-directed violence; and collective violence. The concluding chapter offers recommendations for countering violence as a multidimensional public health threat. This chapter discusses major lessons to date, why the health sector should be involved in addressing violence, and the assignment of responsibilities and priorities. Each chapter contains a summary conclusion and references.
