In order to comprehend the experience of juveniles detained in France's Prisons for Minors (PM), this study focused on detainees' experiences in the context of their confinement cells.
Abstract
The study's intent was to focus only on what youth experience when they are involuntarily confined to the small space of a cell, even though these facilities are touted as offering improved rehabilitation, academic education, and health services. The issue addressed in this study is whether confinement in a small space, which persists in the regimen of housing detainees in confined spaces in the PMs is just a continuation of the traditional experience of imprisonment. Goffman's book "Asylums" provided a theoretical background for focusing on the sociological and psychological impact of confinement and isolation in small spaces. Residents were observed in their cells, were interviewed about their being confined in cells, and were asked to make drawings of their cells. 4 figures and 25 references
