This article describes the work of the Walsall Youth Activities Unit, organized to develop activities for children and young people to divert them from crime, between early 1987 and late 1989.
Abstract
In addition to outlining the activities of the Walsall Youth Activities Unit, this report reviews management and staffing procedures and summarizes project achievements and problems. The unit's primary achievement has been to help the residents' association develop a wide range of activities for youth at Walsall. Both vandalism and public nuisance behavior dropped to a record low when a summer holiday scheme was implemented. Project strengths include a strong grassroots approach and widespread support from statutory and voluntary agencies. The residents' association operates many of the activities now that funding for the unit has ended. Areas of need on the estate include work with girls and young women. 1 table
