THE MAJOR SECTION OF THE BOOK DESCRIBES THE PARTICULAR CRIMES THAT ARE MOST FREQUENTLY COMMITTED BY YOUNG PEOPLE.
Abstract
THE NORTH CAROLINA ATTORNEY GERERAL'S OFFICE PREPARED THIS BOOK TO ACQUAINT YOUNG PEOPLE WITH THE STATE CRIMINAL LAW AND THE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES WHICH FOLLOW THE COMMISSION OF A CRIME. THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THE SOURCES AND NATURE OF THE LAW AND OUTLINE THE ORGANIZATION OF THE STATE'S COURT AND PRISON SYSTEMS. THESE INCLUDE OFFENSES SUCH AS AUTO THEFT, SHOPLIFTING, VANDALISM, ASSAULT AND BATTERY, AND THE USE OF NARCOTICS AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. IN ADDICTION TO DEFINING THE ELEMENTS AND PENALTIES OF EACH OFFENSE ONE OR TWO ACTUAL CASE HISTORIES ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE EACH CRIME. THESE PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF THE KINDS OF ACTION WHICH CONSTITUTE THE CRIME AND THE BACKGROUNDS OF THE PERSONS WHO COMMITTED THE OFFENSE. THIS ILLUSTRATED BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN SIMPLE LANGUAGE AND TECHNICAL SUMMARIES ARE AVOIDED. THIS FORMAT COULD BE ADAPTED BY OTHER AGENCIES WHO ARE INVOLVED IN EDUCATING YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT THE OPERATION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. (SNI ABSTRACT)
