This article summarizes the activity of Canadian youth courts for the 1994-1995 fiscal year (April to March), the youth court caseload, and information on accused characteristics and case outcomes, and examines recent trends in the data.
Abstract
Highlights presented in this article include the following: (1) There were 110,000 cases processed in Canadian youth courts, 5 percent fewer than the preceding year. (2) Almost half involved property offenses; one in five involved violent offenses. (3) Two-thirds resulted in findings of guilt. (4) Property convictions decreased by 11 percent from the previous year. (5) Probation was the most significant disposition in 48 percent of all cases with conviction, while one-third received a custody disposition. (6) Nearly three-quarters of cases with a custody disposition involved sentences of 3 months or less. (7) Four of every ten convictions involved youths with at least one prior conviction. (8) Half of all youth court cases were dealt with in 2 months or less. Footnotes, tables, figures
