This report summarizes a series of one-day seminars held in England in 1989 and 1990 regarding the development of social crime prevention initiatives for young people.
Abstract
The first of the seminars examines the specific contributions of local education, social services, and housing services toward youth crime reduction. It deals with issues of truancy, disruption, pastoral care, and community use of schools as well as community care plans and management of public housing. The other two seminars present local approaches to youth crime prevention. One program implemented the 'Five Towns Initiative', a Home Office pilot project in inter-agency crime prevention and reduction in Bolton which uses a situational and social approach to crime prevention. This included the creation of a home watch development team; the development of a Crime, Law and Society Project curriculum pack for 14- and 15-year-olds; and a Neighborhood Project. In Birmingham City, a crime prevention subcommittee was created that adopted a community safety strategy, initiated social education programs in school, supported Wheels Adventure Park activities, and provided activities through youth services. Discussion themes included consulting young people, youth work, school response to the community, play and leisure provision, youth homelessness, safer cities, and a social action approach.
