This lesson plan provides instructors with information and teaching instructions for a course designed to teach New York City school safety officers how to prevent and eliminate youth gang activities in and around the school.
Abstract
The course provides information on the impact of youth gang activity on schools and the signs of youth gang activity in a school. Students are also taught how to identify gang-related problems in schools and what to do when gang activity is likely to erupt. Upon completing the course, students can identify other resourceful personnel in the school and local police precinct who can help prevent and eliminate youth gang activities. The teaching methods recommended in the lesson plan are video, group discussion, and lecture. The instructor is provided detailed instructions on teaching methods to use in each course segment. Subjects addressed include the nature of a gang, the types of gangs in New York City, gang characteristics, why youths form and join gangs, the impact of gangs on schools, and how to identify problematic youth gang activity in a school. The procedure for reporting problematic youth gang activity is also described. A test on the course material is provided.
