This manual provides a step-by-step approach for planning and implementing a program in which youth make a significant contribution to reducing or preventing alcohol and other drug use among youth in high-risk situations.
Abstract
The first chapter addresses basic administrative actions, such as the development of program-related agency policies, the hiring of a program coordinator, and the creation of a program budget. This is followed by a chapter on program planning and evaluation that includes discussion of the development of program goals, objectives, and tasks, as well as the development of an appropriate evaluation strategy. A chapter on program implementation focuses on the preparation of agency staff for youth participation, including recruitment and screening of youth volunteers, preparation for the training of peer leaders, the supervision and retention of volunteers, and the involvement of parents in the program. Core training is addressed in a chapter that contains an outline of a 42-hour training curriculum for all youth volunteers. Information on training for specific alcohol- use and other drug-use prevention activities covers program structure and training for youth in specialized roles such as hotline volunteer, members of an agency's board of directors, peer educator through drama, peer counselor, and educator in a shelter and in a school. A chapter on resources lists national and community-based agencies that support alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services for youth in high-risk situations, videos, curricula, and educational materials.
