This packet presents various materials designed to help a community develop programs under the auspices and funding of the Center for Youth as Resources (YAR).
Abstract
YAR adds a new dimension to the national movement to engage youth in service. In YAR youth help direct the program for their peers, identify the issues of greatest concern, and design and deliver services that address community needs. Grants for each project range from $100 to $5,000, averaging about $900 per project. Every funded project is designed, led, and executed by youth, with help from a supporting adult. A local program administrator manages daily operations. This individual knows the community, is committed to the principles of YAR, and works well with both youth and adults. YAR projects have focused on such issues as education, housing, hunger, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, and infant mortality. This packet contains a brochure that explains the YAR program, along with various materials that describe YAR projects that have been performed, sample projects, and resources for program implementation. Suggested sample projects are in the areas of conflict resolution, criminal justice, drug abuse, education, the elderly, the environment, health, homelessness, recreation, and general teen issues. Other papers and documents describe technical assistance materials, list contact persons in each State, and present various reports on YAR projects and activities. A catalog of reproducibles, videos, new programs, instructional guides, and new products is designed for use in crime prevention projects. A YAR newsletter is also included.
