EFFECTIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS MUST CONSIDER INSTITUTIONAL FORCES WHICH INFLUENCE YOUTH AND HELP SHAPE THEIR BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
INSTITUTIONAL AND SOCIETAL PRACTICES WHICH PRODUCE NEGATIVE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE FAILURE RATE ARE CALLED ATTENTION TO. PRINCIPLES FOR DELINQUENCY PREVENTION INCLUDE THE PROVISION OF MORE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE AND MEANINGFUL ROLES FOR YOUTH AND THE INVOLVEMENT OF YOUTH IN THE PLANNING, OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS. THERE IS A NEED TO REDUCE NEGATIVE LABELING OF YOUTH BY THOSE AGENCIES WHICH APPLY THE LABELS, E.G., DROP-OUT PROGRAM, OR DELINQUENCY-PRONE YOUTH. GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPING A YOUTH SERVICE SYSTEM AND FAILURES OF EXISTING AGENCIES ARE NOTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
