A national phone survey, conducted during March-May 1987 with chief State juvenile correctional officials or their designates, determined how States were addressing the problems associated with the transition of youth from correctional facilities to their home communities.
Abstract
The 26 questions focused on the organization of juvenile correctional services, policies and procedures related to transition, and the identification of the best transitional programs in each State. This report summarizes data on the organization of juvenile correctional services and existing policies and procedures related to transition. Subsequent reports will profile each State system and summarize the best transition practices. Transition services in some States have been facilitated by placing juvenile correctional services and social services in the same agency. Only 9 of the 51 States and the District of Columbia reported that they require community supervision after release at the mandatory release age. Forty-three States report having established special provisions for youth who have committed violent offenses. This often includes the option of a commitment to an adult facility. Transition services include notification to the public school of a youth's release, school enrollment, and job training and placement. 4 references, survey questionnaire, and 3 tables.
