These essays discuss the need for prevention strategies to address the problem of youth violence.
Abstract
The book examines the latest research on effective prevention and intervention strategies for reducing youth violence. It deals with both perpetrators and victims of violence and understanding the risk factors facing youth. It assesses the effects of exposure to violence and the continuity of aggression from early childhood to adulthood, and outlines an integration strategy for a sound public policy toward prevention and treatment of violent behavior among youth. The book is divided into five sections: Etiology and Prevention; Exposure; Gender, Gangs and Guns; Interventions; and Conclusions. Individual chapters discuss, among other topics: (1) youth violence prevention, intervention and social policy; (2) principles of military combat stress treatment related to children in high-risk environments; (3) youth gangs, drugs, and socioeconomic isolation; (4) girls and violence; (5) role of firearms; (6) family factors; (7) teaching prosocial behavior; and (8) psychopharmacological and neurobiological issues.
