Statistical tables in this document cover characteristics of a sample of youthful offenders committed to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections from 1968 to 1979, such as criminal history, social background, institutional placement, and recidivism.
Abstract
Tables first present data on offense, sentencing, and institutional placement for the total sample of individuals 17 years of age or younger committed to adult correctional institutions during the 12-year period. Statistics then cover variables relating to juvenile court history and social background, including race, marital status, family structure, education, and residence. Offense and commitment characteristics of the sample are broken down into type of release, age at offense, time served before release, and specific offenses resulting in current imprisonment. Institutional movement factors are also addressed, with attention to furloughs. A separate section provides a breakdown of all variables for youthful offenders that were bound over and tried as adults in the adult criminal process. Within each category, data are presented for each year and for the total 12-year period. For analysis of this information, see NCJ 83857 and 81889.
